(More customer reviews)I bought one at Walmart last year. I use it pretty often, but mostly for making popcorn. Turn temp to 350, put a couple-three tablespoons of peanut oil in the bottom, and then when the oil heats up throw in 1/3 to 1/2 cup of popcorn. Put the cover on and keep the pot moving while the corn pops. When the corn has just about stopped popping, turn the heat off and pour the popcorn into a bowl. Butter, salt and eat. YUM!
I've deep-fried scallops in it, steamed vegetables, cooked rice, made soup and even baked potatoes. The thing works great! I wasn't going to write a review until I saw Alton Brown talk some trash about it on Good Eats. I got pretty defensive about my humble Presto cooker! He was doing a silly episode about "man food" like corn dogs and thin, square hamburgers. Well, when Mr. Brown was explaining how to fry the corn dogs he said (while holding a Presto mutlti-cooker) that a pot with an heating element on the outside of the bottom wasn't a good idea because first the element had to heat the pot and then it had to heat up the oil. Too slow. After that he displayed three home-use rectangular fryers with immersion type heating elements. He said they were also better because they each had cooking baskets and break-away magnetic cords. He picked the one with the digital controls, while implying that this was somehow better than the manual rotary temp control.
I don't know if A. B. gets paid for product placement on his show, but I really thought he was being disingenuous regarding the Presto "pot." First of all, about the heating element on the bottom of the Presto cooker: During the frying demonstration, Mr. Brown had some text placed over the screen that said that if you didn't have a special electric fryer, that a pot on the stove-top would work fine. Isn't that interesting? What the heck is a pot on the stove, but just a heating element on the outside of a pot that heats up the pot and then the oil inside? That's exactly what he was criticizing the Presto kettle about. What gives? Secondly, the Presto cooker DOES TOO have a magnetic break-away electric cord to keep the unit from tipping when the cord is yanked by accident. Also, the Presto cooker DOES TOO come with a frying-steaming basket, which Brown implied it didn't have. Nya, nya, nya! See, I can be just as immature as Alton Brown!
I don't know if the rectangular fryers are really better, but I'm sure they cost a lot more. My Presto cooker was $26.85 at Walmart. I keep it in a lower cabinet - it doesn't take up much space there. I pull it out when I need it. It's inexpensive, easy to use, and simple. When we go to Maine in August, I'm allowed to take only one of my counter-top appliances. So, I just take the Presto cooker with me. Normally, I cook steel cut oats in a small bowl, sitting in water, in a slow cooker (a bain marie - sort of - found the idea here [link deleted]) I can do the same thing with the Presto cooker. And I have a pot with me on vacation that I can do so much more with.
One last thing. With my slow cooker I use a plug-in timer called a Rival Smart-Part. But it's not rated to control the wattage of the Presto multi-cooker. I found a heavy-duty programmable digital timer that I use to turn the Presto cooker off and on automatically. This device really allows me to use the Presto cooker like a slow cooker, without over-cooking stews and such when I am out of the house all day. The Presto multi-cooker is a terrific appliance! Buy one now, and don't believe everything you see on TV!
Flash Update! Here is another reason to buy a Presto multi-cooker: I'm making a beef stew with red wine tonight. What a mess browning the stew beef! I have a 3 quart Wagner cast-iron chicken fryer, and this is what I used to brown the beef chuck cubes. These days the meat hasn't been aged much, and so it is very difficult to brown properly. I managed to do it in batches, but the stove-top got pretty messy by the time I was done. I put the browned meat, vegetables, and garlic into the Presto cooker ( I made sure to deglaze the chicken fryer with wine and include all the tasty bits) and continued to cook the stew. And then I could proceed to clean up the stove-top while the beef stew simmered away in a different part of the kitchen. I am very pleased not to have to clean up all that oil spatter after dinner!

Pot fit nicely into my turkey fryer stand so I can make a mess outside instead of inside. I found more of Eastman's wing sauce at my local Gander Mountain outdoors store. Maybe Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops carry the sauce too. FYI, found a nearly identical, off brand fryer at Menard's for $15 (w/o any sauce--big deal) after I paid 35 plus tax at Dick's Sporting Goods.

The capacity is enough to cook for 2 or 3 at a time, the unit is well-designed and solidly built, and even though it lacks a temperature control it heats the oil to 375 degrees (I checked with a cooking thermometer) which is what most recipes seem to recommend. The filter system works well to contain odors and the drainage tube makes cleaning a breeze. The only issue I've had is that it's hard to avoid condensation on the viewing window, but that's no big deal. Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)Although this versatile appliance will steam and boil as well as deep fry, it was its frying ability that caught my interest and convinced me to buy it. And am I glad I did for last night we enjoyed some of the best fried chicken ever to come out of my kitchen. And yes, that's saying something. While we don't overindulge in fried foods, through the years I've fried my share of chicken, most of it to positive reviews. This batch was particularly moist and juicy, yet crisp on the outside, a fact which I attribute, at least in part, to the adjustable temperature gauge on the Multicooker. None of my other deep fryers had that feature. With the others, I was forced to rely on the manufacturers' preset temperature which I suspect wasn't really hot enough to prevent the chicken from absorbing some of the oil and becoming somewhat soggy. The Multicooker allows a range of 250° to 375 ° F. I set it at 375° as the manual suggests and the results were mouthwatering.
As for capacity, it's generous. The basket measures roughly 8" long by 7" wide and 3 1/2" deep. I was able to fit 4 large chicken thighs per batch with room to spare. I'm sure I could have added two more but I preferred to err on the side of caution to avoid overcrowding. Because the chicken was boneless and skinless, each batch only took about 10 minutes and was perfectly done. I fried three batches back-to-back and had no problems with the fryer overheating.
Deep frying is usually messy no matter how careful you try to be but my experience in that department was pretty positive too. The cooker is solidly built and simple to assemble. The lid fits the pot securely and the basket is easy to raise and lower with the lid in place, which greatly reduces spattering and the risk of burns.
I have no doubt that I'll use the Multicooker for boiling and steaming at some point but if all it ever did was deep fry, I'd still consider it money well spent.

I had it up to the highest temp (375), and it fried foods terribly, so I got out my candy thermometer: the highest temp it got to (and this was measured in the so-called "hot zone") was 350, and it was more often than not in the 325 range. Use a candy thermometer in a high-sided pot. This product was a terrible disappointment.

(More customer reviews)I originally had my eye on the T-Fal 3378100 Maxi Pro deep fryer but a recent series of bad reviews lead me to consider other options. Before buying a deep fryer I did a lot of research on the Internet and narrowed my focus to the following criteria:
Most capacity. Have you seen the inside of the small deep fryers? You'd be hard pressed to get even one potato worth of fries in those things. I really don't like working in batches as it makes it hard to time the meal so I wanted something that held A LOT. With over a gallon of oil capacity, it is the largest I've seen short of commercial models.
Temperature recovery. Once you drop the cold food into the deep fryer the oil temp will go down. How quickly the unit recovers makes the difference between soggy and crispy golden brown. With an exposed heating element I felt I got faster recovery and when I cooked fish the drop was only about 20 degrees and for a very short time.
Easy clean up. The frying vessel is stainless steel and goes inside the aluminum exterior you see. This is removable and has corners for easy pouring. It is also very nice that the cover, fry vessel and basket can be put in the dishwasher. The only part that gets dirty and needs to be cleaned by hand is the heating element.
HOT HOT HOT. Well, this is the only area where the unit let me down. The company says the maximum tempeature is 360 but I couldn't get anything over 345. The temperature is a little low but the food I made came out just fine. You may need to fry things for a bit longer but this is less hassle since the machine is automatic compared to an open pot on the stove.
I honestly think the only way to do better than this unit is looking to commercial equipment which is not feasible given a home environment. The unit performs well even when pushed to the limit (yes, I tried loading the thing up with a full 3 pounds) and is more convenient than a pot on the stove. I will admit that the unit is *very* simple. No electronic doodads, timers and the like. This is a good thing, however, since there is less to break and in the end the unit works for the reason you bought it.

(More customer reviews)I like all the features of this deep fryer, except for one major detail. It doesn't get hot enough! Granted, it only falls short by 10 degrees (365¡ instead of it's 375¡ setting), but when it comes time to fry Chinese rice sticks, for example, they just don't get done. French fries come okay though, so I guess how it'll suit you depends on what you'll be using it for.
Couple the thermostat problem with the fact that it's a bit on the small size, and you may be even less satisfied. If, for example, you load it to capacity with frozen fries, expect the temperature to drop dramatically. Plus, even when it's loaded to capacity, it barely cooks enough food for my family of four (two of which are two young girls who eat like fleas.)
I suppose I'd recommend it for serving one or two people at a time, and only if it's used for less peculiar types of foods than rice sticks.

The removable frying pot is great for clean up. Outer plastic really does stay cool. The old stainless fryers could burn you on contact. The oil does tend to splatter beyond the inner bowl onto the heating element, so odor is a small problem. Other than that, great value. Nothing like home made french fries!

The cover is not attached so you have to lift it off and putting it on. It means that your arms will end up getting hit with hot oil. There really is no filter in the cover either so the steam is extra-oily.
I will end up buying a new one and having an expensive mixing bowl.

When cooking with it you have to keep adjusting the heat as it won't hold an even tempature, one pan will get hot and the other too cold, you adjust it and it goes the other way, one reason for this is the paper thin pans that won't hold any heat. The directions for assembly are very scant. Again this fryer is junk, I will not recommend to anyone.

It can't keep the oil temp. up and will unexpectadly turn off and not be able to be turned back on for hours. The basket/handle combo are poorly constructed since the handle must come off to close the lid and it is extremely difficult to remove the handle. DO NOT BUY!
