14" COMMERCIAL ALUMINUM NON-STICK FRY FRYING PAN - NSF Review

14 COMMERCIAL ALUMINUM NON-STICK FRY FRYING PAN - NSF
Average Reviews:

This is a very high-quality frying pan; restaurant quality. The only issue I have with it is that it is very heavy. Fortunately for me, my boyfriend does most of the cooking, but I do a fair amount of the cleaning. The pan is too big to fit in our medium-sized dishwasher. It's large size is nice for cooking certain dishes, but also means that I must wash it by hand. It washes nice and easy with a solid non-stick coating. However lifting it up to rinse can be a bit of a strain on my wrists, given its weight.

We just purchased this pan because we liked the idea that the exterior is non-stick as well as the interior. We have used their enameled cookware in the past and found it very difficult to keep the enamel clean. This one may not be as pretty but it sure should be a year from now. In addition, the pan comes with a 10 year warranty for the cook surface. It also has an extra thick flat bottom which is great for our flat range top.

Deeper than a standard frying pan, this large-capacity pan measures 11-3/4 inches in diameter and features higher sidewalls that neatly contain ingredients when cooking and allow for a greater range of cooking techniques. Use it for anything from making scrambled eggs and pancakes for breakfast to sauteing vegetables or making a tofu stir-fry for dinner.
Like other pieces in Le Creuset's collection of Forged Hard-Anodized cookware, the pan features hard-anodized stainless-steel construction that goes through a hot-forging manufacturing process for twice the strength and to ensure it will never warp. The unit's magnetic aluminum-encased stainless-steel base heats quickly and evenly and can be used on any stovetop surface, including induction. The pan also comes with a metal-utensil-safe nonstick coating that allows for lower-fat cooking (no need for excess butter or oil) and effortless food release. Furthermore, the cookware's hollow cast stainless-steel handle and opposite helper handle come riveted for strength, remain cool while cooking on the stovetop, and offer a comfortable grip for confidence when lifting or transferring. Oven-safe to 500 degrees F, the cookware cleans up easily by hand or in the dishwasher and carries a 10-year limited warranty.

Lightweight. Fast and even heating. Oven proof handle. Angle of the rim makes it easy to flip eggs. I have the 8" nonstick for eggs (two at a time usually) and only takes one hand. I was a little nervous when I bought this skillet, since at the time there were no product reviews on it, but I was desperate, and since I had had good luck with other Cuisinart products, I took the chance. Am I glad I did! We were just beginning a major kitchen remodel, which meant that for at least two months I would have to improvise cooking facilities for 5 adults and a grandchild. This skillet has been a real workhorse for me, and a genuine lifesaver (and budget-saver) during the remodel. Its cost was no more than 2 dinners for my family at a moderate-cost restaurant, and I saved that much the first week by cooking those dinners at home in this skillet instead. Its large capacity makes it extremely versatile. I've used it to fry chicken, make one-pan dinners, cook bacon and eggs, frozen blintzes, pot roast, stir-fry meals, you name it. It makes a beautiful risotto, and I've even used it to cook corn on the cob and boil potatoes. Everything came out exactly as I'd hoped, or better. I am especially happy with the Cuisinart's solid, sturdy base that won't let the skillet tip over and endanger the cook (or the curious grandchild). I also love the sturdy nonstick surface, which after two months of frequent use is still like new, in contrast to some nonstick pans I've had where the coating scratches or wore off so quickly that by the 3rd or 4th use the food had to be chipped out. The temperature control responds very quickly, too. You can certainly buy a cheaper electric skillet, but if you use it frequently, a cheap pan will be trash in a short time and you may not be happy with the way it performs in that short lifetime. This Cuisinart is worth every penny, and I expect to be using mine for a long, long time.

The only con is that I actually don't need all 3 in everyday life. I use the smallest one for eggs or simple cooking. The largest one for fried rice and etc. I haven't used the middle one, yet, but the quality of these pans are very good, which is not surprising for t-fal. The design is a lot better than in the picture they show here. I think $27 for three pans is a wonderful deal!
Oh, by the way, you need to boil some water in them before you use them for the first time. They kinda smell bad in the beginning.

Cuisinart Chef's Classic Saute Pans Review

Cuisinart Chef's Classic Saute Pans
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Cuisinart Chef's Classic saute pan has quickly become my favorite pan. It's huge - a full 12" across - which makes it very versatile. The pan conducts heat extremely well and is oven safe to 500 degrees. The handle is very sturdy, reasonably comfortable, and stays cool (outside of the oven, of course). The lid fits tightly. Both the interior and the exterior are very shiny and attractive. All this and it's easy to clean. Yet this pan sells for just a fraction of the sexier brands like All-Clad or Calphalon.
The chief reason for the great price is due to the construction. This is known as a "disk bottom" pan because it has a highly conductive aluminum disk embedded in its base. The really expensive brands feature "cladding", where a layer of conductive metal (usually aluminum) is embedded throughout the entire pan. Although the cookware industry loves to say that disk-bottom pans are inferior, test after test proves this claim is untrue. After all, we don't cook on the sides of a pan; we only cook on the bottom. See Cook's Illustrated magazine, May/June 2003, for a great discussion of this.
There are a few reasons why this pan might not be right for you. This pan's size makes it fairly heavy, so if you have arthritis or weak hands, you might want to opt for a smaller pan. Similarly, this pan might not fit on those tiny stovetops or ranges that you sometimes see in "galley" kitchens in apartments. But if you want a large, durable, high-quality saute pan at a fraction of the cost of the big-name brands, this is the pan for you.

I looked at it like this:
The 7 Qt. Dutch Oven cover fits the 12" skillet.
The 12" cover is $20.01
The 7 Qt. Dutch Oven w/Spiral Handle is $38.98
If I subtract what I'd spend for the 12" cover the D.O. only costs $18.97 more. That's a huge hunk of iron for a mere $18.97.
I did the same thing by buying the 5 Qt. D.O. because the cover fits my

Also, I found a brush that works very well to clean the pans and lids Power Tip Dish & Glass Brush

Emerilware Cast Iron 12 Inch Skillet Review

Emerilware Cast Iron 12 Inch Skillet
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this skillet after reading every review here, believing that the negative reviews were probably due to a lack of understanding how to work with cast iron.
At first, I did like the skillet. I took it through my own seasoning process (even though it was pre-seasoned) and was happy with both the appearance and (more importantly) the cooking qualities the first couple of times I used it.
I have been using it 1-2 times daily for the two weeks I've had it. A cast iron skillet is supposed to become better and more seasoned the more you use it. This one, however, is becoming worse. It doesn't heat as evenly as my other cast iron pieces, and no matter how carefully I clean and re-season it (I clean with kosher salt and a lint-free cloth, rinse with hot water, towel-dry then heat-dry it, then re-season with oil), the "seasoning" is becoming more and more uneven.
I had hesitated to buy this skillet since it's made in China and I don't want even the smallest chance that there is lead in this skillet. I should have gone with my hunch because now, more than ever, I'm upset at the idea of unknown elements being in this skillet, especially since the skillet isn't up to par with my other cast iron. I've also heard more and more stories of Emeril cast iron cracking... which I had thought initially due to too-rapid heating or cooking, but now I'm wondering if the Chinese cast iron itself is an inferior compound with sub-par "filler" material.
By point of comparison, four days ago I bought two Lodge 8" skillets. Of course, after my Emeril pre-seasoning experience, I had low expectations. But I was amazed as I gently washed them for the first time and water actually beaded on the surface and rolled right off. I decided to do something bold and daring, and cooked some eggs in the Lodge -- only the second time I cooked with it. Amazingly, those eggs slid right out as if the pan were Teflon -- a minor miracle with cast iron.
I can't return this skillet since I've used it, but I will be buying a Lodge 12" skillet instead. I'd rather waste my money and KNOW that I'm buying a safe, time-tested, made-in-the-USA item from a company with a longstanding reputation. The Lodge skillet is much less expensive, yet worth so much more... the superior pre-seasoning and the highly reputable manufacturer make Lodge the better deal even if it were higher-priced. Sorry, Emeril, but my vote is with Lodge.

I purchased this electric skillet when my old trusty electric skillet died. What a mistake! The product is raised in the center, and as a result, any liquid, such as pancake batter or eggs, run to the sides. My biggest complaint is that EVERYTHING sticks to the pan. No amount of oil or butter can stop virtually all foods from sticking. I was initially attracted to this product because it has a removable pan. However, it does not heat evenly. I suspect this is because the pan just sits on top of electric coils, and the heat is not distributed evenly. I do not recommend this product!

I love the size of this pan but it simply will not heat! I cooked pancakes in it and they would not brown. I deep fat fried okra and it took 45 min. on high till they browned and were so tough they were difficult to chew. Almost burned my stove up. I never cook anything on high heat! Tried to fry bacon in it. Wouldn't do anything. I switched pans and it immediately started sizzling. I do not recommend this pan!

I've decided to replace my teflon pans with cast iron and this is one of the first ones I bought. So far it has been excellent. The large size is fantastic, though it's definitely heavy. My arm muscles are getting a workout! I'm glad I got it pre-seasoned, since that was one less thing to hassle with. I have found that cooking with cast iron makes food taste better. Kind of surprsing. I'm not sure why this has been the case, but my husband and I have both noticed it. I have to say though, it is very different than cooking with a regular teflon pan. At first I kept burning everything. Cast iron gets very hot and maintains a steady hot temperature. I'm finding that I'm basically cooking everything in this pan on med-low heat, where I would have used medium heat. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase though and plan on getting a couple more cast iron pans

Lodge cast-iron cookware has long been admired for its superior heat retention and even heat distribution, but now the company adds another enticement with its Lodge Logic line. All Lodge Logic cookware, including this generously sized 15-1/4-inch skillet, comes preseasoned via a proprietary "electrostatic" vegetable oil spray system and is ready for cooking right out of the box--unlike traditional Lodge cookware, which needs seasoning in your home oven before use. During the timesaving preseasoning process, oil penetrates deeply into the cast-iron surface while a high-temperature gas oven seals it in, preserving the cookware for generations and creating an attractive heirloom finish.
The skillet measures 15-1/4 inches in diameter and 2-1/4 inches deep--an ideal size for large tasks such as cooking a stack of pancakes or making a family portion of scrambled eggs. The vessel is also suited for roasting vegetables, searing steaks, or making quesadillas, as its cast-iron material delivers a smooth, consistent temperature without wasting heat. The pan's esteemed heat retention particularly enhances slow-cooking recipes that call for tender meats and rich, seasoned flavors. Chefs will also appreciate the durable handle with a loop on the end for hanging, along with the opposite helper handle that aids in transport--a necessity when cooking with heavy cast iron. And finally, the skillet includes a couple of side indentations that facilitate smoother pouring. Lodge recommends hand washing the pan with a stiff brush and hot water for best results. The skillet also comes with a lifetime warranty.

Average Reviews:

I would have never bought this pan if I had seen the reviews here, but I bought it on an impulse at a cookware outlet and I'm so glad I did! My pan doesn't have any of the problems (hot handle, peeling nonstick) that the other reviewers here have experienced. I suspect that since those earlier reviews the pan has been redesigned by the manufacturer.
Whatever the reason, I absolutely love it! It's the only pan I've ever found that is the perfect size (4") for english muffins and orowheat sandwich thins. Honestly, I'm a rather practical person, so I generally don't buy things with little characters on them, but this pan has ended up being the most-used pan in my kitchen. It's perfect for making scrambled egg sandwiches, so I use it several times a week.
If the handle starts heating up or the nonstick peels off, I'll update this review, but in over six months of weekly use, it's performed like a little champ! And, over time, the cartoon egg on the handle has grown on me, it seems kind of shocked or amazed... perhaps because it has to watch me cook an egg!
BTW-The secret to light, fluffy scrambled eggs is to use a low heat and stir constantly. It takes a little longer, but it is so worth it.
Enjoy!
Claire

All of the cast iron properties come in to play when using the fryer, and it provides the control and the stability needed when frying foods. Despite the bad reviews, I also tried this pan. It is awful - DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!
To address issues other have had -
(1) It was perfectly flat out of the box, but warped as soon as medium heat was applied. Probably because it is so thin. Note the 10" crepe pan weighs as much as this monster of a pan, and appears to be at least 3 times thicker.
(2) It is way too thin to heat evenly - I think our heavy duty cookie sheets are just as thick! To check it out, I used an infrared thermometer and found out that once the hottest part of the pan reached about 350 (ideal for things like eggs and pancakes), there were parts that were 75 degrees cooler. This means burnt eggs and raw pancakes. Yum.
The size would probably make a good chicken fryer for a large family, but it has no top, so I'm not sure what you really could do with it, so mine went back today.
