Oxo Good Grips Candy/Deep Fry Thermometer Review

Oxo Good Grips Candy/Deep Fry Thermometer
Average Reviews:

I usually like Oxo products, but this one is a real loser. Not only does it not give accurate readings (which in itself should deem it useless, being that it is a THERMOMETER after all) but there are other features that further enhance its horrible design. First of all, the "handy" (so they claim) spin dial that allows you to set the temperature that you want to reach, is so flimsy that the slightest movement of the thermometer throws the dial off. Useless. Secondly, after only one handwashing, water seeped under the dial face which is impossible to get out. The water then turns to steam which fogs up the display so you can't even read its inaccurate readings. 2 weeks later there is STILL steam under the dial. Useless again. And to pour salt on my already stinging wound, I had emailed Oxo to inquire about how to return this item and get a refund weeks ago, but they have yet to respond to me, even though on the package it states that satisfaction is 100 percent guaranteed. Well, I am NOT a satisfied customer and if my second attempt to reach them proves fruitless once again, then I doubt I will ever purchase another Oxo product again, no matter how good they are. It pains me to even give this product one star, as a product that's utterly useless deserves no star at all. Oxo should be ashamed of themselves. Thanks for allowing me to vent my 2 cents.

Maverick ET-7 Remote-Check Wireless Thermometer With 2 Probes Review

Maverick ET-7 Remote-Check Wireless Thermometer With 2 Probes

This is useful and fun, what more could you ask ? You can use one or two probes. The probes are connected to the transmitter, you then turn on the remote, then the transmitter. I use it for everything, steaks, chops, whatever. I go into the living room and watch the remote. When the temperature gets over about 100 I turn the meat over if necessary. The only thing I have noticed is the temperatures that trigger the audible alarm are set too high, likely thanks to lawyers. For example, when I set it to medium rare for beef, it was more like medium. Now I set it on rare ( 140 ) and get a perfect medium rare. For pork the number is 170. I take it off at 160. After all, it continues to cook after it is taken off. Before I bought this I used to guess but now I get perfect results every time. Highly recommended.

The RediChek remote features a transmitter that reads the internal food termperature with a digital electronic food probe, then sends that information wirelessly up to 100 feet away, freeing you from standing next to the oven or grill during the cooking period. When the desired temperature is reached an alarm goes off!The taste or doneness of meats can be determined to be rare, medium, medium well, or well done based on the type of food and the internal temperature reached during cooking.

Weber 2820 Smokey Mountain Cooker/Smoker Review

Weber 2820 Smokey Mountain Cooker/Smoker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Weber Smokey Mountain (WSM) is really the king of the bullet smokers. You may be tempted to go with a cheaper Brinkmann model, and if your budget just can't afford the WSM, then you can do some prefectly acceptible bbq on the brinkmann.
But if you can afford the extra for the WSM, you will get much better temperature control, and getting good temperature control means you can keep a good consistent low temeperature for doing some truly outstanding smoke cooking.
I am by no means an expert on the subject, only having used my WSM about 10 times. Even so, I have been getting results better than any ribs I have tasted at any restaurant (with the exception of real honest to goodness BBQ joints that cook over hardwood for 12 hours plus...). You can tell real barbecue because it has a pink smoke ring in the meat, which I always get when I use the WSM.
You will want to check on the net for the virtual WSM web page, it has a lot of information, and I found the info there a lot more useful than the methods recommended in the owner's manual.
This cooker is not for the impatient who want instant results, your first few times using it may be frustrating until you learn to control where the temperature is going, not where it is right now. But stick with it and you will start to make some truly great bbq. And understand that you are going to be cooking low and slow, which means it is going to take 4, 5, 6 hours or more to do ribs, but once you get the hang of it, they will be some of the best ribs you have tasted.
More than a fair number of barbecue champions use the WSM get results as good as if not better than those guys using the $1000 plus offset pits. The WSM is a great value and the perfect starter "pit" for someone thinking about getting into serious barbecue.
(You can do yourself a favor by using hickory wood chunks as part of the fuel, and real lump charcoal, not briquettes. Briquettes are nice and all, but they are filled with clay and other impurities, really if you are going to the trouble of using charcoal instead of gas, go with real charcoal if you can find it)

Butterball Carving Gloves Review

Butterball Carving Gloves
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These are a must-have item if you use a smoker and need to pick up, or move food without burning your hands. I've also found them to be very helpful when shredding pork (for pulled pork). Makes the process much easier and comfortable.
Also works well when not using the BBQ for things such pulling meat off of bones when making soup, or shredding boiled chicken. You do need to exercise some care -- the gloves can be slippery when dealing with hot food, especially if it is greasy.
The gloves are made of a thick, heat resistant material that works very well for handling food. They are NOT, however, meant for high temperature uses, such as taking a metal pan out of a hot oven. Think of them as potholders for food items - something to keep your hands from burning when handling hot food.
The fingers are a bit stiff, but allow for decent mobility. I had no problems holding a knife or using a fork to pull pork while wearing them. They extend well up your forearms to keep grease splatters at bay (they are about 13.5 inches from fingertip to bottom edge). Easy to wash. I've only used them a few times so far, so I can't attest to how long they will last, but they seem pretty sturdy, and should last for some time provided they are cared for.
I take a mens size XL glove, and these fit fine (a bit snug, but very workable).
Very good price - much less expensive than other hot food handling gloves I've seen. Highly recommend.

Masterbuilt M7P 7-in-1 Smoker and Grill with Pan and Basket Set Review

Masterbuilt M7P 7-in-1 Smoker and Grill with Pan and Basket Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I went to various retail outlets to inspect Webers, Brinkman and the Masterbuilt. I ended up buying the Masterbuilt M7P. I also was not interested in refrigerator size smoker either. An 18.5 inch grill diameter suites me fine.
Here's why:
1. Brinkman - Single not multi-tiered. Harder to work in lower chamber unless you're very tall. Priced over (...)
2. Weber - Way over priced, period. Only had charcoal option not duel; charcoal and/or propane. Height to low.
3. Shop the inet. You can find an M7P for under (...).
I can control the heat better with propane rather than charcoal as I like a cooler smoke under 125 degrees. I bought the M7P strictly for smoking as I have a gas BBQ grill. The M7P water pan could be used as a drip bowl if you do.
Kit included an aluminum pot and mesh basket, I suppose for crab/lobster boils.
Masterbuilt M7P
Pros:
* Xlnt packaging as every square inch was utilized. Amazed how small a box the M7P arrived in. No waste. Go green.
* Nice finish. Over time we'll see if the shine holds. Wish it came in a primer (dull) black instead.
* Every piece was wrapped well.
* All nuts, bolts, and screws plainly labeled.
* Easy to follow assembly instructions.
* Smokes extremely well. I use the water pan as a heat blocker to cool the smoke down.
* King salmon, beef brisket and pork butt come out lip smackin' to die for dee-lishous.
* Breaks down easily so multi-usage becomes a reality. Just lift the sections up and away. That's it.
* Handles remain cool after 5 hours of smoking. BIG thumbs up!
* NO smoke leakage, it all inside the unit.
Cons:
* Looking for a another burner. The flame range is medium to high. When set low it tends to choke. By this I mean you hear a whooshing/roaring sound as the flame turns from blue/green to yellow/orange. By low I mean the flame is licking the chamber bottom 8" away, yet I cannot maintain a blue/green flame.
* Have to make adjustments to the top lid air/smoke vent so it closes completely.
**Note: When installing the burn unit note the positions of the legs. One leg is at the back while two are in front. Mount the unit so the propane hose faces the correct direction - right or left - as it's not long enough to reach around if mounted incorrectly. If U goof, it's a simple four screw removal to remount the unit...a 2 minute job.

Other details include U-shaped legs for stability, a temperature gauge, and cool-touch handles for safety. A 10-1/2-quart aluminum pot and a basket with a convenient drain clip come included for frying up fish, French fries, and more. Simply cook food in the pot then lift the basket to drain. Maverick Industries ET-73 Maverick RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker Thermometer Review

Maverick Industries ET-73 Maverick RediChek Remote Wireless Smoker Thermometer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am an avid griller, BBQ'er and Smoker (year rounder, competitions, 15 pound meats etc...). I purchased this product after enjoying using the Williams/Sonoma remote probe temperature gage for quite some time. I now believe that a remote temperature gage is a must.
This particular product works as advertised and I am happy with it. I would describe it as average, nothing special. It seems to work well, has a decent transmitting distance (although I hear there was a bad batch out there that were very weak). The digits are large and easily readable in a glance. The alarm couldn't be louder. The back light is bright. And the probes seem high quality that will last a while.
However, it has a few annoying traits: 1) The on/off switch on the Transmitter is located behind the battery door which means you have to take off the battery door to access it, not a huge problem as the door access screw only takes a quick half turn with a penny or fingernail. 2) Setting the Food and Smoker alert levels is also an annoying as the device only has one "adjust" button that scrolls up one degree at a time. This means that if you currently have a 180 degree setting (beef well done) and wish to change it to 140 degrees (beef rare) you must scroll the digits past the max setting 370 degrees (who cooks anything to this temperature?) around to the minimum setting, and if you miss it or forget to push enter you have to go all the way around again. It reminds me of the early digital alarm clock radios where if you passed 7 AM wake up time you had to go all the way past 7 PM to get back to 7 AM. The feature can be VERY annoying, especially since most other remote probes have both and UP and DOWN buttons, but they don't have the smoker temperature probe that this one does.
Overall I'd buy another one but I wouldn't pay too much for it.

Brinkmann 810-5000-0 All-In-One Outdoor Cooker, Black Review

Brinkmann 810-5000-0 All-In-One Outdoor Cooker, Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This All-in-One idea is really cool. As a smoker, it's very good. Easy to maintain temperature by adjusting the gas flow and air intake. It's a little dificult to run at low temps (200f) if the weather is warm. If you turn the gas down too low, a slight wind will blow out the burner. We solved the problem by giving it more gas, but starving the intake of air.
As a grill, it's not very good. It works, but not very efficiently. We have to crank the gas up real hot to get the pumice warm enough to sizzle steaks. We found that in charcoal mode, it works best after putting a grill inside, raised slightly above the vented tray bottom with some spacers. Put the charcoal on the raised grill. The extra air under the coals makes for a hotter fire.
Now the great part; fried turkeys. This is no 30,000 BTU camp stove. The burner on this baby really puts the heat on 4 gallons of oil. It's almost scary how powerful the burner is.
One final word; this setup does not come with a propane tank. If you don't have one, count on another $25-30 bucks, and on big projects, make sure it's full. Theres nothing more depressing than getting halfway through a 8 hour turkey smoke and run out of fuel.

I bought it because I make ice cream at home and I need exact temperature readings (I use the "How to make ice cream" book that you can find here - superb book).
4 stars because the clip is not strong enough to keep the thermometer up when stirring the mixture while cooking.
