Oxo Good Grips Candy/Deep Fry Thermometer Review

Oxo Good Grips Candy/Deep Fry Thermometer

I usually like Oxo products, but this one is a real loser. Not only does it not give accurate readings (which in itself should deem it useless, being that it is a THERMOMETER after all) but there are other features that further enhance its horrible design. First of all, the "handy" (so they claim) spin dial that allows you to set the temperature that you want to reach, is so flimsy that the slightest movement of the thermometer throws the dial off. Useless. Secondly, after only one handwashing, water seeped under the dial face which is impossible to get out. The water then turns to steam which fogs up the display so you can't even read its inaccurate readings. 2 weeks later there is STILL steam under the dial. Useless again. And to pour salt on my already stinging wound, I had emailed Oxo to inquire about how to return this item and get a refund weeks ago, but they have yet to respond to me, even though on the package it states that satisfaction is 100 percent guaranteed. Well, I am NOT a satisfied customer and if my second attempt to reach them proves fruitless once again, then I doubt I will ever purchase another Oxo product again, no matter how good they are. It pains me to even give this product one star, as a product that's utterly useless deserves no star at all. Oxo should be ashamed of themselves. Thanks for allowing me to vent my 2 cents.

Maverick CT-03 Digital Oil & Candy Thermomter Review

Maverick CT-03 Digital Oil and Candy Thermomter
Average Reviews:

This seems to be a well made product, and if not for one tremendous flaw I could somewhat recommend it.

The manufacturer got a the hardware design and functionally right. The temperature readings are very accurate. The view-screen tilts for easy reading, even on pots with sloping sides. And having the 14 most common candy and oil temperatures stored in the unit for easy selection is a nice addition, unfortunately it's also the Maverick's Achilles heel.
Because if you ever want to cook something at a temperature 'other' than those 14 presets, you may as well use a cheap analog thermometer. Unlike any other digital thermometer I've ever used, the Maverick does not permit setting of custom temperature alarms. You'll either use their 14 alarm presets or nothing at all.
Certainly the unit will display whatever temperature it is currently reading, but so can any $3 analog candy thermometer. In my mind, the primary purpose of a digital thermometer is to alert a cook when a specific temperature is reached. Not allowing the cook to set alarms at their chosen temperatures is a ridiculous and fatal defect.

The unit does have some issues even aside from that major flaw. The 14 available temperatures are selected from an LCD display, unfortunately the text on the display is very tiny it's awfully difficult to read. I have good eyesight, those suffering even moderate nearsightedness will be unable to read this display unassisted. This tiny-text problem seems also to a consequence of those 14 presets. If this thermometer worked like most other digital thermometers, the display would be more than big enough show 3 digit temperatures in huge lettering. But those 14 presets have too much text to be displayed at anything other than a tiny size on the unit's screen.
This product also misses the mark in catering to the needs of cooks. In candy making, knowing when candy has dropped to a certain temperature is just as important as knowing the highest temperature reached. This unit has no function for setting alarms at cooling temperatures.
This product shares it's reason for failure with many other failed electronic products. It has good hardware but very poorly designed software (firmware). The fixes should be simple by software standards. The designers need to ditch 14 presets, allow setting of alarms for any user-defined high and low temperature, and increase the text size. Those few changes would turn this lemon into an amazing kitchen tool. But if it remains as it is, it will be just another piece of kitchen junk to clutter your drawer.

Taylor Classic Candy and Deep-Fry Analog Thermometer Review

Taylor Classic Candy and Deep-Fry Analog Thermometer

I have been using this for quite a while for candy making. Although some of the writing has washed off, I can still read the indentations and so continue to use it. Of all of the thermometers I own (and I have several), it is the most accurate. Candy thermometers should always be tested before each use by putting them in boiling water and adjusting your final temperature by any +- they show from true 212F or 100C boiling temp. This one has never needed any adjustments; others have been off 6 to 8 degrees. Because of this, its strength (no exposed glass bulb to break) and its ease in cleaning(dishwasher-proof), this is the only candy thermomoter I recommend when teaching candy making.

The secret to deep-fat frying lies in preheating the oil to the proper temperature before adding the food; for this, a thermometer is essential. This model from Taylor meets our criteria for a deep-fat thermometer: clear markings measure from 100F to 400F, its 12 1/2" long, stainless-steel frame is sturdy and features a metal clip that will hold the thermometer safely to the side of your pan up to one inch thick. Also, works well for candymaking, featuring markings for thread, soft ball, hard ball, soft crack and hard crack stages.

I bought this thermometer for deep frying, mostly tempura. It seems to be accurate within a few degrees, which is enough. The bulb is well protected, and held off the bottom just right. The numbers do not come off (as I read the Taylor brand one does). I highly recommend it.

The thermometer is made great, the design and clip work well. However, the temperature is off by 10 degrees at boiling and cannot be adjusted. Now that I know that it is 10 degrees off, I can still use it, but as it is a candy thermometer, if you get it too hot you change the candy texture because a few degrees goes from soft candy to hard candy...not so good. Wouldn't recommend this thermometer.
